I am writing this post the day after we were at a wedding and wanted to write about a wonderful experience that I had. Yes having the number of allergies that I have makes it hard to eat out especially at a group event.
Yesterday two good friends of ours got married and we were invited to the wedding. Of course we had to let them know about all of my food allergies. When the invitation arrived we had choices for the main meal. Of course there was a chicken selection that I really wanted but figured it would be best if I stuck with the steak option because to me ssteak is the best thing to eat while we are out in groups.
During the reception before dinner there were a number of items that were shellfish but I avoided them and had no problem at all. Avoiding appetizers at events is something that I have been getting able to handle. The main meal was going to be the challenge for me.
After we were seated for dinner one of the servers came around with the list of choices that everyone had. I did make sure that I mentioned to her about my shellfish allergy just to make sure that it had been noted but had a feeling it would have been considering the bride is a chef.
While we were waiting for dinner to arrive another person from the kitchen came over to our table and asked where I was sitting. I talked to this person and she let me know that the everyone with regards to the main course would be no problem at all for me which made me feel good and she also let me know that one of the desserts I couldn't have because it was raspberry. I was very surprised when she said that because on the reply card I didn't mention my other food allergies because I know I can normally just avoid them. After the person left our table I found out the my husband had sent an e-mail to the bride with all of my allergies and it must have been passed onto the caterers.
Boy was I in for a surprise when the main course showed up because instead of getting the steak that I had settled on I received the chicken which I had preferred. Yes during all the conversations between my husband and the bride he mentioned that I would like the chicken but probably would settle for the steak which I did. What a great dinner experience this was because normally during bigger events I make sure I have snack food with me in case I need it. This time I didn't need any of my snacks I had with me.
After having such a great dinner experience I asked if I could speak to the head of the kitchen and he came out to talk to me. I wanted to say thanks because of how safe I felt. When I was talking to him I found out that after the appetizers they had sterilized the kitchen to make sure everything was free of shellfish and also no meal had vegetable oil in it because of my allergies. What a wonderful place this was and for a group to care this much really meant a lot to me.
Yes the chef background of the bride helped but also have a place that understands and cares about allergies sure makes for a wonderful experience. All I can say is I was extremely impressed with the entire dinner experience last night.
See it does work if you let people know what you are allergic to.
